GEO vs SEO: the new battle for visibility in the age of generative AI

Emmanuel Dollé · June 11, 2026

In short

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) aims to rank pages in search results.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) aims to be selected and cited in answers generated by LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity).
  • SEO measures positions and traffic. GEO measures share of visibility, recommendation rate and sentiment inside AI answers.
  • Both disciplines are complementary: SEO partly feeds the LLM corpus, GEO converts that presence into selection.
  • Traditional search volume is expected to drop 25% by 2026 (Gartner). Ignoring GEO means letting competitors capture the decision.

Definitions

SEO (Search Engine Optimization): the set of techniques to improve a site's position in search engine result pages (Google, Bing) to drive organic traffic.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): the set of techniques to influence how language models (LLMs) cite, recommend or describe a brand in their generative answers.

Where SEO optimizes a ranking of links, GEO optimizes the selection of an answer. The decision is formed before the click.

Why SEO is no longer enough

For 25 years, digital visibility boiled down to a simple equation: ranking = traffic = conversion. Users explored a list of links and built their own opinion.

With LLMs, that journey collapses. The user no longer consults a list: they receive a synthesized answer. A brand can be perfectly ranked on Google and completely absent from ChatGPT's answers. Visibility no longer guarantees selection.

According to McKinsey (2025), 50% of consumers now intentionally use AI search, and 44% make it their primary source for purchase decisions. Dataslayer measures a 61% drop in organic CTR on queries where AI Overviews appear.

What GEO adds (and does not replace)

GEO doesn't make SEO obsolete. LLMs partly rely on the indexed web, editorial sources and authority signals built through years of SEO. But GEO adds three layers SEO doesn't cover:

  • Selection: among all available sources, which one does the model choose to cite or recommend?
  • Narration: how does the model describe the brand — with what tone, attributes, and associated competitors?
  • Conversation: how does the brand behave over a multi-turn exchange, not just an isolated prompt?

How to do GEO in practice

  1. Map target conversations — start from intents and personas, not just keywords, to reconstruct real user conversations.
  2. Measure share of visibility — track on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity how often the brand is mentioned, recommended, or ignored.
  3. Analyze sentiment and attributes — identify what LLMs actually say about the brand and its competitors.
  4. Strengthen structural sources — high-authority editorial content, press citations, Wikipedia, FAQ, Schema.org structured data.
  5. Iterate continuously — models change every week. GEO is a monitoring discipline, not a one-off audit.

FAQ

What's the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO optimizes a page's ranking in search results. GEO optimizes a brand's selection in answers generated by LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. SEO is measured in positions and traffic; GEO in share of visibility and recommendation rate.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. They are complementary. LLMs partly rely on the indexed web, so good SEO feeds GEO. But a brand can be well ranked on Google and absent from AI answers: GEO specifically addresses that selection question.

How do you measure a brand's GEO performance?

Three main metrics: share of visibility (how often it appears in answers), recommendation rate (when it is cited as a priority choice) and sentiment analysis (what the models say about the brand).

Which engines should GEO target?

The four major ones today: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Claude (Anthropic) and Perplexity. Each has a different behavior, corpus and selection logic, which justifies multi-engine measurement.

How long does it take to see GEO results?

Faster than SEO in some cases, since LLMs reindex sources frequently. But like SEO, durable gains come from building editorial authority and citations in trusted sources, which takes several months.
